Carol Sherman

Hon. Carol R. Sherman (ret.), Vice President 

Carol Sherman began her legal career as a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society, Juvenile Rights Division and represented children in juvenile delinquency, child protective and PINS cases in New York City Family Court. She then brought impact litigation on behalf of those clients and became the Deputy Attorney in Charge of the Division. When she began, there was very little law in the areas of juvenile justice and child welfare. She has dedicated her professional life to and remained in the forefront of these areas of law throughout her career. 

Upon leaving the Legal Aid Society in 1997, she founded The Children’s Law Center (CLC) and then served as its Executive Director. She was also an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School.  

In 2008, Carol Sherman became a judge in the New York State Family Court, and, in 2014, she was appointed Supervising Judge of the Bronx County Family Court. In 2017 she retired from the bench and was appointed Chief Magistrate and Counsel to the New York City Family Court. In January 2023, Carol Sherman retired from the court system.  

Carol Sherman’s professional activities included the New York State Bar Association where she served as Chair of the Committee on Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare and was a member of the House of Delegates. At the New York City Bar Association, she was a Vice President, Chair of the Executive Committee, Chair of the Nominating Committee and Chair of the Family Court Committee. She continues to be a member of the New York State Judicial Committee on Women and the Courts. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
